Residents fare well at farm show

Garrett Miller of Saxonburg earned the reserve champion award in the Limousin spring heifer calf competition at the 103rd annual Pennsylvania Farm Show. Garrett also won reserve champion in the Maintainer yearling category.

Butler County was well represented among the hundreds of competitors at the 103rd annual Pennsylvania Farm Show, which ran from Jan. 4 to Saturday at the Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg.

Earning accolades were:

Beef cattleGarrett Miller of Saxonburg: reserve champion awards in the Limousin spring heifer calf and Maintainer yearling; first place in the Limousin spring heifer calf, Limousin junior late spring heifer calf and Maintainer get-of-sire contests; seventh in the junior showmanship; and placed in several other competitions.Austin Miller of Saxonburg: Limousin grand champion heifer, junior champion heifer, premier exhibitor and first place early summer yearling calf awards; in the Maintainer open, the champion junior yearling, reserve champion junior heifer calf, first place early summer yearling heifer and first place produce of dam awards; in the Limousin junior contest, first place awards for early spring heifer calf and early summer yearling heifer contests, reserve champion spring heifer calf, junior champion heifer and reserve grand champion heifer; in the Maintainer junior early summer yearling heifer and the all other breeds open late spring heifer calf contests; and placed in other competitions.Stacy Miller of Saxonburg: grand champion bull, champion spring bull calf and first place for summer bull calf in the Limousin open.Sara Lang of Harrisville: first place awards in the Shorthorn open for cow/calf pair, spring bull calf and early spring yearling bull; cow/calf pair champion, junior champion bull and reserve grand champion bull contests.Benjamin Allen of Saxonburg: second in the Shorthorn open spring heifer calf and the Shorthorn junior late spring heifer contests.David Schultheis of Karns City: first place in the Shorthorn open spring heifer calf, Shorthorn junior late spring heifer and junior heifer calf contests; and fifth-place in the Shorthorn open.John M. Allen of Saxonburg: grand champion female and champion juniors female contests in the Angus open; in the Hereford open, senior champion heifer, grand champion bull and first place in the early junior yearling heifer, early spring bull calf contests; in the Hereford junior open, grand champion heifer, senior champion heifer and first in the early junior yearling heifer contests.

RabbitsSydnee Brunst of West Sunbury: first for Californian, American chinchilla, English spot — black, American best of breed youth, youth breed fur/wool — white and youth breed fur/wool — colored; and placed in other contests.Andersen Brunst of West Sunbury: first in the English spot — black, English spot — blue, English spot — chocolate, English spot — gold, English spot — lilac, English spot youth, New Zealand — blue, New Zealand — red and New Zealand — white contests; and placed in other contests.Heidi Brunst of West Sunbury: first, third and fourth in the argente brun.Emmaline Brunst of West Sunbury: first in the English spot — chocolate.Sayge Brunst of West Sunbury: fourth in the youth showmanship novice and sixth in the Holland lop contests.Alyssa Dreucci of Connoquenessing: third in the champagne d'argent and placed in the mini lop broken and solid pattern contests.Emily Hoffman of Connoquenessing: first and fifth in the Polish blue eyed white and first in the Polish broken pattern contests.Olivia Blatt of Butler: first place in tan-black, tan-blue, tan-chocolate, tan-lilac and tan youth contests.

Other categoriesIn the agriculture education demonstration contest, Moniteau High School placed third, seventh and 14th with different entries.In the wool competition, Connie Dunn of Butler won first place in non-auction commercial farm flock fleece, Merino ram fleece and Merino ewe fleece contests; champion nonauction commercial farm flock fleece, nonauction champion breed fleece and grand champion nonauction fleece awards; and a third-place.In the alpaca competition, Jillian Ranker of Butler won the senior grand champion and senior obstacle champion awards; first in the senior obstacle (ages 16-19); and third in junior showmanship. Emily Hoffman of Connoquenessing placed seventh in the junior obstacle and showmanship. Alyssa Dreucci of Connoquenessing placed second in intermediate showmanship and third in obstacle. Adrian Lavorini of Butler placed seventh and eighth in the obstacle (ages 9-12).In the meat goat competition, Tyler Karner of Butler placed second in the 12-16-month doe and showmanship; a third-place; and 12th in the junior market goat weight Division 10. Brooklyn Peters of Connoquenessing placed fifth in the junior market crossbreed weight Division 20.In the junior market swine competition, Mason Dupe of Butler placed sixth in the weight Division 9. Morgan Teets of Slippery Rock placed eighth in weight Division 15.In the apiary competition, Raymond Lascek of Sarver placed eighth in the chunk, seventh place in the dark amber and finely crystallized or creamed and 10th in the commercial beeswax competitions.In the bakery contest, Barbara Lascek placed first in cookies, third in cakes and fifth in quick breads.In the family living competition, Hadley Painter of Butler placed fifth in the junior photography ornament and the crazy jar contests. Sayge Brunst placed fifth in the junior photography color scenic contest. Barbara Lascek placed first and third in the decorated bowling pin contest.
