SANTA ANA, Calif. — Toymaker MGA Entertainment is asking a judge to award it $177 million in punitive damages after a federal jury last month found its rival Mattel liable for $88 million for misappropriation of trade secrets.

U.S. District Judge David Carter is hearing arguments on the question of punitive damages and other issues on today.

In their verdict in April, jurors also rejected Mattel's claim that it owned the copyright to MGA's popular Bratz doll line.

Mattel had alleged that the designer of the Bratz dolls, Carter Bryant, was working for Mattel when he came up with the idea.
