A 14-year-old boy headed to school in Butler was hurt this morning when he was struck by a side-door mirror of a work van at Hansen Avenue and Pillow Street, authorities said.

The boy, whose name was not immediately released by Butler police, was knocked down but he did not appear to be seriously injured. He was conscious and talking with emergency crews.

“He was complaining of shoulder pain but it didn’t look like he had any cuts,” said Capt. Kevin McAfee of the Butler Fire Department.

The boy was reportedly taken by Butler Ambulance Service to Butler Memorial Hospital and then to an unknown Pittsburgh hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

Fire officials said the boy was walking to Butler Intermediate High School about 6:50 a.m. when he ran into the intersection and into the path of a construction company van.

The driver, an unidentified 50-year-old man, told investigators that he swerved to avoid the youth.

“The boy was wearing dark clothing and darted right in front of the (van),” McAfee said. “The guy said if he hadn’t swerved he would have run right over him.”

“He was pretty shook up,” McAfee said of the driver.

The boy was knocked onto the road and he was still wearing his back pack when rescuers got there.

Crews eventually placed him on a back board and in a cervical collar before he was taken away in the ambulance.

Butler police had no information available this morning but said the investigation continues.
