James M. Worsley

James M. Worsley, 82, of Arlington Avenue died at 12:25 p.m. Friday in the emergency room of Butler Memorial Hospital peacefully, surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Born Aug. 26, 1923, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of Albert Edward Sr. and Anna Howthorne Worsley.

Mr. Worsley was a longtime salesman for Dick Glenn's Auto Sales and he retired from Carbo Jet.

Mr. Worsley was a member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He was a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps, serving during World War II in the Pacific. He received the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry while serving with Battery H, Third Battalion, 10th Marines Second Marine Division, in action against Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Islands, July 7,1944. During an enemy counterattack, Pfc. Worsley used his carbine to cover the withdrawal of his section and continued the protecting fire until wounded were moved out. When he left the position, he rammed home a round in a howitzer and fired a piece single-handedly on advancing Japanese. His courageous action, unselfish regard for his own safety and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U. S. Naval Service. This citation was presented and signed by then Secretary of The Navy John L. Sullivan. He also fought in the battle of Tarawa, one of the costliest battles in regards to American causalities.

He was a member of The Michael Kosar Post 778 of The American Legion. He was a life member of The Joseph T. Black Post 249 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Marine Corps League, Bantam Detachment 743.

He enjoyed boating.

Mr. Worsley is survived by his wife, Herta Winkelman Worsley, whom he married on Dec. 14, 1945; a son, Albert E. Worsley, III of Butler; four daughters, Mrs. Robert (Carol) Robb of Carlisle, Mrs. Robert (Sue) Uram, Roxanne Worsley, and Mrs. Kevin (Jamie) Franchuck, all of Butler; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Albert E. Worsley, Jr. of Butler; a sister, Mrs. William (Jean) Brackett of Butler; and numerous nieces and nephews.

<B>WORSLEY</B>— Friends of James M. Worsley, who died Friday, May 12, 2006, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the <B>Thompson-Miller Funeral Home</B>, 124 E. North St.Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert W. Strobel of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will follow in Butler County Memorial Park.The family suggests contributions may be made to The Alzheimer's Association, Greater Pennsylvania Chapter, 100 W. Station Square Drive, The Landmarks Building, Suite 500, Pittsburgh, PA, 15219 or to Toys For Tots, Butler Chapter.
