Borough library slates 3 holiday programs
EVANS CITY — Three programs at the borough library are meant to bring the community together through fun projects and philanthropy.
Michelina Stickney, the librarian at the Evans City Public Library, said a winter-accessories collection, a special story time and a craft event are at the library on South Jackson Street.
New and used hats, gloves and scarves are being collected through Dec. 30. The warm winter wear will be donated to the Clothing Cupboard at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church on Van Buren Street.
Last year, three bushels of hats, gloves, mittens and scarves were donated, which Stickney said speaks to the character of Evans City residents.
“It shows they’re caring, and they want to improve their community by helping others,” she said.
The items can be dropped off during library hours.
The library will host a fun, free and sustainable family activity at 10 a.m. Saturday. Library board President Patti Nelson will lead the craft-making event “Recycled Christmas.”
Stickney said Nelson will help participants make ornaments and Christmas trees from recycled books and papers. It is open to all ages.
She said Nelson will use book pages and discarded papers to fashion attractive and unique ornaments. The same materials will be used to create paper Christmas trees.
“She made a big Christmas tree out of books for the library,” Stickney said.
The project is part of the library’s Make It and Take It program, which has residents creating a different craft at the library each month.
Those interested in the Recycled Christmas event must register by Thursday.
Children can enjoy a reading of the children’s book “The Polar Express,” at 10:45 a.m. Dec. 9 and 10 at the library. Registration is requested by calling the library.
The tale, which centers on a boy’s renewed belief in the magic of Christmas, will be read by Conductor Jim as it has in the past.
Stickney said Conductor Jim is somewhat of a mysterious legend.
“I don’t know his name,” Stickney said. “I got his e-mail, and when I replied, I just called him ‘Conductor Jim.’”
She said he also reads stories at other libraries in the Butler County Federated Library System.
The library can be reached at 724-538-8695.
