Memorial Day activities
Here is a list of some of the scheduled activities celebrating Memorial Day in Butler County this holiday weekend.
ButlerThe Butler parade will begin at 10:40 a.m. Monday at Diamond Park and march north on Main Street.Following the parade, an event at North Cemetery will include speakers, a performance by the Butler Notables, and a speech by Veteran of the Year Robert Ripper of Chicora. Ripper, a veteran of the U.S. Army, served in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967.Wreathes also will be placed at memorial sites in and around the city.
Butler TownshipButler County Veteran’s Services will host Memorial Day events on Monday starting at 9 a.m. with a program at VA Butler Healthcare with director David Cord speaking.
Evans CityThe Evans City Bishop Sharrar American Legion Post 219 will host a memorial service at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Evans City Cemetery. Those who died in battle will be remembered with a flag planted for each war in which Americans fought.The names of about 350 veterans who have died since last year’s ceremony will be read.The speaker is U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly of Butler.Those attending should take their own seating.
FreeportA parade will start from Freeport Junior High School on Fourth Street at 9:30 a.m. Monday and will progress along Buffalo Street to Fifth Street, Market Street, and Second Street to Riverside Drive.Riverside services will start at 10 a.m. at Freeport Tower.The speaker will be U.S. Navy veteran Gary Glenn, who is a 1973 graduate of Freeport High School.The Memorial Day observance is hosted by the VFW Post 6648.In case of rain, the parade will be canceled, and services will be moved to St. Mary Mother of God Catholic Church on Fifth Street.
HarrisvilleThe Harrisville American Legion Post 852 will sponsor a Memorial Day parade at 1 p.m. Monday.A memorial service will follow at Community Park.The Harrisville Community Band and the Harrisville Volunteer Fire Department helped the American Legion coordinate the events.
MarsThe American Legion Post 787 and the VFW Post 7505 will hold a service at 2 p.m. Sunday outside their building on 331 Mars Valencia Road under a pavilion.The service will last about an hour and will be followed by a luncheon at the building’s banquet hall. Members from the Mars High School band will play music, and the Mars Fire Department will unfurl a large U.S. flag.
RimersburgThe Shearer-Shick Post 454 of the American Legion and the VFW Post 7132 will host Memorial Sunday and Memorial Day services.The Sunday service will be at 3 p.m. at Veterans Park. In case of rain, the service will move into the Rimersburg United Methodist Church.Services on Memorial Day will begin at 9 a.m. with the parade from Rimersburg Elementary School to the cemetery, where the program will be.In case of rain, the program will be at Union High School at 9 a.m.
SaxonburgThe Saxonburg American Legion and the VFW will host a parade at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the municipal building. The parade will proceed to Roebling Park for a ceremony at 11 a.m.
Slippery RockMemorial Day will be commemorated with a ceremony at the Slippery Rock Cemetery at 10 a.m. Monday. The event is sponsored by the Frank P. Cheeseman Post 393 of the American Legion.The featured speaker will be Lt. Col. Jeffrey Barta, director of the ROTC at Slippery Rock University.A picnic will follow at the Slippery Rock Community Park Veterans Pavilion.
Worthington/FeneltonThe Craigsville United Methodist Church of Buffalo Charge, 313 Craigsville Road, Worthington, will host a Memorial Day weekend service at 10 a.m. Sunday at the church.The McKee Chapel United Methodist Church and the Fenelton United Methodist Church will participate, and there will not be services Sunday at those churches.
Zelienople/HarmonyThe American Legion Post 474 will host services at 9 a.m. Monday at the Zelienople Cemetery, at the Harmony Square at 9:30 a.m. and at the Harmony Cemetery.At 11 a.m. at the Memorial Park on Main Street, a service will include a flyover by the Condor Aero Club from the Zelienople Airport.
