Alleged candy bar theft lands man in jail

MUDDY CREEK TWP — One could say that a candy bar cost a Butler County man $1,000.

That’s the bail amount imposed on Todd E. Watt, 30, of Prospect after he was arrested last week on charges of swiping a Reese’s candy bar Nov. 12 from the Last Minute Mart on Route 19 in Muddy Creek Township.

Store surveillance video helped state police identify Watt as the suspected shoplifter who got away after taking the $1.89 item from the candy rack, according to court documents.

Watt, who has two prior convictions for shoplifting, was arraigned Wednesday on a felony count of retail theft.

Pennsylvania law mandates third-degree felony grading for a third or subsequent retail theft arrest, regardless of the value of the merchandise stolen. The charge carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and a $15,000 fine.

Watt was placed in the Butler County Prison on $1,000 bail following arraignment. A preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 28 at the office of District Judge Tim Shaffer in Slippery Rock.
