Matthew T. Hawkins Sr., 88, of Middlesex Township, died tragically on Thursday on his farm of injuries received from a tractor accident.

Born in Fox Chapel on June 18, 1920, he was the son of the late John and Laura McNamara Hawkins.

He was a member and Charter Founder of Holy Sepulcher Roman Catholic Church in Middlesex Township, a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Butler County Democratic Committee and the Butler County Conservation Board. He was also the Middlesex Township Supervisor from 1958 to 1064 and 1972 to 1977.

He was a self employed farmer in Middlesex Township. The Pittsburgh Magazine voted the Hawkins sweet corn the "Best in Pittsburgh."

Surviving are five daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Simmons and her husband Tim, of New York, N.Y., Ellen Flemma, Jane Peterson and her husband Greg and Elizabeth "Liz" McMeekin and her husband Tom, all of Valencia, and Ann McNulty of Harmony; a son, Dr. Matthew Hawkins Jr., M.D., and his wife Lin of Pacifica, Calif.; and a sister, Ruth Homburg of Australia. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred J. "Millie" Sirney Hawkins, whom he married Feb. 10, 1945, and who died June 14, 2008; a brother, John Hawkins; and a sister, Katherine "Kitty" Nebel.

<B>HAWKINS</B> — Friends of Matthew T. Hawkins Sr., who died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the <B>MCDONALD-AEBERLI FUNERALHOME, INC.</B>, 238 Crowe Ave., Mars. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Holy Sepulcher Roman Catholic Church, Rt. 8, Glade Mills, with the Rev. Dan Maurer, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Sharpsburg.Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.
