Athletes of the Week: Thompson, Wise enjoy big games in their sports

Brady Thompson is part of a lethal 1-2 pitching punch at Moniteau that wins consistently.

Morgan Wise is happy her consistent scoring led to one win at Freeport.

Their dominant performances have led to their selections as Butler Eagle Male and Female Athletes of the Week.

Thompson, who joins Branson Carson in giving the Warriors a formidable pitching tandem, tossed a one-hitter and struck out six in his team's 15-0 win over Forest Area. He also contributed a triple, single and four RBI on the offensive side.

“I've had a few games like that in rec ball, but not too many in high school games,” the senior said.

Thompson is hitting .300 this season and leads the team with 17 RBI despite hitting in the No. 7 position in the batting order. He is 4-0 on the mound, averaging more than a strikeout per inning with an earned run average between 2.90 and 3.10.

When he's not pitching, Thompson often finds himself behind the plate.

“That's definitely helped my pitching,” he said. “I know where I want the pitcher to put the ball against certain hitters and that shows me where I want to put my pitches when I'm out there.

“With Branson, I love being part of our 1-2 pitching combination. That should bode well for the playoffs.”

Thompson said he uses his fastball as his 'out' pitch and mixes in an effective changeup to right-handed hitters.

He plans to play summer baseball for West Sunbury in the Butler County Area Baseball League and hopes to walk on and play baseball for Slippery Rock University next year.

A junior on the Freeport girls lacrosse team, Wise scored goals at an alarming rate this season. She tallied 47 goals and added 15 assists, but the Yellowjackets were 0-14 before closing the season with a 10-7 win over Greensburg Salem.

Wise netted seven goals in that game.

“I loved it because it was Senior Night,” Wise said. “We had three seniors on the team and this was a great way to dedicate the season to them.”

Freeport's second-leading scorer netted 12 goals this season.

“Morgan drew a lot of attention from defenders, but her speed enabled her to win a lot of those battles,” Freeport coach Tahlon Kirkland said. “She's got a great shot, too.”

Freeport's lone win came against a Greensburg Salem team that had three boys in its lineup, including the goaltender.

“We never played against boys before,” Wise said. “That was fun.”

Wise only scored eight goals her freshman year. Losing her sophomore season to the coronavirus pandemic, her offense exploded this year.

She played last summer for the True lacrosse club program — and spent every other day working on her game.

“When last season was canceled, I was devastated,” Wise said. “I decided to have my own season anyway. Every day, for two or three hours, I went out in the yard and practiced.

“We have a lacrosse net back there I can shoot at. We also have a hard net that you can fling a shot into and it passes it right back to you. I worked hard at honing my skills.”

Wise said she is looking into liberal arts programs at Division III schools and hopes to play lacrosse in college.
