Manslaughter jail sentence upheld
PITTSBURGH — The state Superior Court upheld a manslaughter sentence for the man who shot and killed a former Slippery Rock University football player in 2013 outside the Original Hot Dog Shop in Oakland.
Isiah Smith, 23, of Pittsburgh’s Lincoln-Lemington section appealed his 5- to 15-year sentence from Common Pleas President Judge Jeffrey Manning, but the three-judge panel of the Superior Court on Monday affirmed the ruling, according to court documents.
The court in its ruling said Smith could not prove Manning had convicted Smith on insufficient evidence or abused his discretion in imposing the sentence. The maximum sentence would have been 10 to 20 years.
Smith was convicted of voluntary manslaughter after he reportedly shot Zachary Sheridan, 24, of Brookline as Sheridan was walking away from an altercation outside the popular restaurant near the University of Pittsburgh campus.
Sheridan was an SRU graduate. A four-year football starter at SRU, he also was a team captain. His last season at SRU was 2011.
