ZELIENOPLE — The borough’s revitalization project plan received some updates at Monday’s borough council meeting.

Council approved a snow melt system and two fire hydrant systems for the municipal parking lot phase of the project.

The parking lot is being built behind the Kaufman House. It will have 111 spaces for vehicles and an entrance to Main Street.

The snow melt system will operate off an electrical grid for the parking lot’s two planned walkways.

It would only come on during times when heat is needed to melt snow.

Borough engineer Tom Thompson said the system’s advantages include longevity and ease of maintenance.

“This certainly seems to be something viable for those two (walkway) locations,” Thompson said.

He said the system itself would cost about $60,000 while installation would cost about $15,000.

The two fire hydrants would provide water service for the parking lot. One will be by the Kaufman House while the other will be by Clay Street.

Borough manager Don Pepe said the decision to have new hydrants comes from previous discussions with borough officials.

The hydrants were not in the parking lot’s original design. Because of that, a change order in the contract was needed.

Council approved advertising the second portion of the parking lot.

The second phase of the parking lot project includes surface treatments such as lighting and painting. Construction for that is expected to start in August.

Council also approved advertising the bid package for the Clay Street electrical line upgrade.
