Cranberry swears in 2 new officers

Cranberry Township's new police officers, Edward Steinmetz, left, and Scott Carney, are sworn in Thursday night by Supervisor Chairman Bruce Mazzoni.

CRANBERRY TWP — Two police officers with township ties were hired by the township supervisors Thursday, bringing the department up to 28 personnel on staff.

Supervisor Chairman Bruce Mazzoni introduced Scott Carney and Edward Steinmetz to the large crowd of attendees before administering their oath of office.

Carney is a lifelong township resident who attended Westminster College. He previously worked for the township in the Public Works Department.

He comes to the township police force after stints as an officer in Economy Borough, Edgeworth Borough, the University of Pittsburgh and Shaler Township.

Steinmetz is a graduate of Mercyhurst College and has worked as an officer at the University of Pittsburgh before coming to Cranberry.

Steinmetz is moving to a new home in Cranberry and is getting married in October. He is a graduate of the Allegheny County Police Academy.

Township Police Chief Kevin Meyer was all smiles as the two new officers were sworn in amid family and friends.

“Officers Carney and Steinmetz were selected from a pool of nearly 120 candidates that applied for the positions,” Meyer said.

“Both excelled in all aspects of the hiring process and were highly recommended. They are great additions to our professional staff and we look forward to getting them out in the field serving the residents and guests of Cranberry Township.”
