FRANKLIN TWP — A couple locked themselves in the bathroom after a man they knew — and feared — allegedly broke into their house, state police said.

Troopers said they arrested the suspected burglar a short time later Sunday night after he fled the scene, driving drunk.

Glenn T. Shumaker, 49, of Franklin Township was arraigned on felony charges of burglary and trespass and a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence. He is free on $50,000 bail.

Police said they were called to the victims' house on Franklin Oaks Drive around 9:30 p.m. and while en route they passed a man, whom they later identified as the defendant, driving away in a car

He was stopped a short distance away and subsequently taken for a breath test, which allegedly showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.20 percent — two-and-a-half times the state's legal limit.

At the victims' home, according to charging documents, the couple told police that Shumaker had entered their home without their permission.

The husband allegedly told police that “he and his wife locked themselves in the bathroom, due to their fear of Shumaker because of past physical altercations.”

He recounted that while in the bathroom, according to the investigating trooper's affidavit, he “could hear Shumaker walking through the house looking for his wife.”

Police said that before marrying her husband, the woman and defendant had been “in a relationship years prior.”

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 26 at the office of District Judge Bill O'Donnell in Slippery Rock. Online court records did not indicate if Shumaker has an attorney.
