Man accused of headbutting a state trooper during DUI arrest
A state trooper was head-butted following a traffic stop late Saturday in which a Butler man with 10 pending cases in Common Pleas Court was arrested for driving under the influence.
State police filed charges Sunday against Kristoffer M. Ion, 30, which include felony counts of aggravated assault on an officer and fleeing, as well as misdemeanor counts of DUI, simple assault, resisting arrest and false identification.
Following Ion’s arraignment Sunday by District Judge Amy Marcinkiewicz, he was placed in Butler County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bond.
Police received a report at 11:43 p.m. Saturday about an erratic driver in a white Chevrolet pickup truck. Police spotted the vehicle on Route 422 near Pflugh Road in Franklin Township.
Police said they turned on their lights and sirens near Youkers Road, but instead of stopping, the truck pulled onto a lengthy driveway that led to a home.
“The operator (Ion) and sole occupant exited the vehicle upon coming to a stop,” police said. “He presented with a thick, slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, redness and swelling to his face and blood on his shirt, and (he) had a strong odor of alcohol emitting from his person.”
Police said field sobriety tests showed Ion was impaired, and the troopers told him he was under arrest.
Police said Ion fled on foot when troopers told him to put his hands behind his back.
Police said they chased Ion on foot, and when the caught him, he resisted them as he was ushered to the cruiser. Police said at one point, Ion had straightened out his legs, making his body stiff and unable to be pushed into the cruiser. Police said another trooper arrived and began working to Ion get in the back seat.
“(Ion) headbutted (the trooper) in the right orbital area of his head causing swelling,” police said.
Following the arrest, police also discovered Ion’s true identity. Police said when they initially approached him, Ion gave them a different name. Police also discovered Ion had a warrant for his arrest through the Butler County’s Sheriff’s Office for a case involving a felony escape charge.
Ion has 10 pending cases in the Butler County Common Pleas Court. The felony escape charge was filed in July of 2018. Ion also has a pending case filed in May of 2019, which included felony fleeing and misdemeanors of DUI and resisting arrest.
Ion has one other pending case from 2019, five from 2020, and two from 2021. While most of the cases involve misdemeanors, one of those pending from 2020 includes felony counts of aggravated assault, trespassing and child endangerment.
The charges were filed after police accused Ion of attacking an ex-girlfriend with steel-toed boots, leaving her with serious injuries.
The $100,000 bond Marcinkiewicz placed on Ion is the most he has received across any of the cases. Before his arrest, Ion has posted a combined $60,000 in bond for five of his 10 pending cases.
A preliminary hearing on the weekend’s filing will be conducted later before District Judge Joseph Nash.
