Carl M. Protzman, 74, of Rural Drive, formerly of Karnes Road, died at 10:23 p.m. Tuesday at the Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 18, 1932, in Butler, he was the son of Carl Adam and Venus Elizabeth Brown Protzman.

He retired in 1988 as a millwright/electrician in the maintenance department at Armco-Butler Works.

Mr. Protzman was a lifelong member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was a member of the Good News Bible Class, served as an usher and was a former member of the church council.

He was a 1951 graduate of Butler High School and served in the Marine Corps in Korea from 1951-1954. He fought from Seoul to the 38th parallel and then served as a body escort east of the Mississippi.

He was a past commandant and active member of the Bantam Marine Corps League, Detachment 743, the Military Order of Devil Dogs 213 and was involved with Toys for Tots. He was honored to serve as the color guard commander and rifle squad commander for ceremonial activities in the Marine Corps League and was honored as Marine of the Year in 1996. He also was a member of the Legion of Honor for the Chaplain of Four Chaplains and American Legion Post 117.

Mr. Protzman loved hunting, fishing, reading, woodworking, shooting trap and being with his family and was a member of the Butler City Hunting and Fishing Club, the Happy Hunters Sportsmen's Club and the Butler Trap League.

Surviving are his wife, Emma G. Swigart Protzman, whom he married on June 14, 1957; two daughters, Sandra Protzman-Cook and her husband, Kenneth Cook, and Mrs. William (Yvonne) Wallace; a son, Matthew C. Protzman; two granddaughters, Jalaine Diane Wallace and Sarah Elizabeth Protzman Cook; and a brother and his wife, Laverne and Shirley Protzman. All are of Butler. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

A brother, Eugene R. Protzman, preceded him in death.

<B>PROTZMAN</B> — Friends of Carl M. Protzman, who died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the <B>Thompson-Miller Funeral Home</B>, 124 E. North St.Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. Alden Towberman officiating. Burial will follow at the Gruenwald Cemetery, Summit Township.Bantam Marine Detachment 743 will hold a military service at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.Information and a private guest book are available at www.thompson-miller.com.
