Kicking at police results in jail term
A Butler man was sentenced to county jail Thursday after being charged with trying to kick a police officer during a traffic stop in November.
Matthew J. Walker, 24, was sentenced to 6 to 12 months in Butler County Prison by Butler County President Judge Thomas Doerr. He was also ordered to pay court costs.
Walker pleaded guilty Nov. 4 to misdemeanor disorderly conduct on May 8.
Butler police initially charged Walker after an incident in the 500 block of West Cunningham Street.
He has been held in the county facility since his arrest in November, and was given time served credit.
Police said Walker was a passenger in a vehicle that was pulled over for spinning tires at a traffic light at West Cunningham and Pillow streets. The vehicle pulled into the Huddle Bar parking lot, when police said the driver, identified as Maxwell J. Bowers, 26, got out and ran away.
Walker also got out of the vehicle and started walking toward the police car, when officers ordered him back into the Jeep but he refused. He then, too, took off running east on West Cunningham Street, police said.
He was found inside a nearby apartment building and was arrested, but when placed into the patrol car, he began to kick the door and window, documents said, as well as trying to kick officers and attempting to get out of the vehicle.
Police said he was searched and found in possession of a marijuana pipe.
A warrant was issued for Bowers, charging him with resisting arrest, driving with a suspended license and reckless driving, but he has yet to be located.
