Video shows vandalism

SRU student faces charges

SLIPPERY ROCK — A surveillance camera is credited with helping solve a vandalism spree that left a half dozen vehicles damaged — to the tune of nearly $8,500.

Slippery Rock University police on Monday arrested SRU student Zachary T. Beneke, 19, of Johnstown, who was arraigned on six felony counts of criminal mischief and later released on his own recognizance.

The vehicle trashing happened before dawn April 9 at the campus parking lot on School Alley, where a security camera caught Beneke in the act, according to court documents.

SRU police said the defendant is seen on video pushing over two parked motorcycles — a 2005 Kawasaki Ninja and a 2005 Honda Shadow

Damage to the Kawasaki and Honda was estimated at $2,946 and $1,547, respectively.

A short time later, the camera shows Beneke pick up a white limestone rock in front of the Dinger Building, documents said. He walked to the Upper Founders residence parking lot and scratched the side of a 2004 Buick Ranier with the rock.

Damage to that vehicle was estimated at $774.

But the suspect was not done, police said. Rock still in hand, he headed to the Lower Stadium lot where he scratched three more vehicles with the rock, documents said.

Those vehicles — a 2015 GMC Canyon, 2011 Nissan Altima and 2006 Saturn Vue — sustained damages between $980 and about $2,000, documents said.

Police on April 16 interviewed Beneke at his dormitory. He allegedly identified himself on the camera and admitted to damaging the vehicles.
