James G. Stokes
James G. Stokes, 91, formerly of Clinton and Pleasantview avenues, Stone Ridge Boulevard and Newhaven Court, passed away Saturday at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born March 9, 1919, in Butler, he was the son of the late Jacob and Mary Loretta (Convery) Stokes.
Jim was a 1935 graduate of Butler High School and retired from the silicon maintenance department of Butler Armco, now AK Steel, in 1977 after 40 years of service.
He served in the Navy during World War II in Borneo and the South Seas.
Jim had a generous spirit and a heart for gratitude. He enjoyed reading, traveling, fishing and the company of family and friends.
He was always a loyal Butler native and devoted member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Butler.
James married Helen Davis Stokes on Sept. 2, 1937. He lost her in passing July 16, 1978. James married Lois Teets Wogan on June 26, 1982.
Surviving Jim are his wife, Lois; two sons, James E. (Louise) Stokes of Hobe Sound, Fla., and Bruce (Clydene) Stokes of New Wilmington; two daughters, Betty Mansfield of Wimberley, Texas, and Ginger (Philip) Angus of Carnegie; six grandchildren, Steven Stokes, Maria Pollock, Joseph, Patrick and Brian Mansfield, and Sheldon Stokes; three great-grandsons, Jameson and Jacob Pollock and Carter Mansfield; numerous nieces and nephews.
Also surviving are three stepsons, David (Darlene) Wogan, Donald (Pennie) Wogan and John (Elaine) Wogan; two stepdaughters, Evelyn (Donald) Kennedy and Janet (John) Federkeil; 12 step-grandchildren; and 23 step-great-grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by sisters, Mary (Mrs. Albert) Zanella, Agnes (Mrs. Merle) Rettig, Helen (Mrs. Nick) Thomas and Blanche (Mrs. Bill) Sinkavich; a brother, Elmer Stokes; a son-in-law, Joseph Mansfield Jr.; and many dear friends.
<B>STOKES</B> — Friends of James G. Stokes, who died Saturday, July 31, 2010, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the <B>Thompson-Miller Funeral Home</B>, 124 E. North St., Butler. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church.
