Campbell Ray produced 32 assists Friday night as Butler’s boys volleyball team opened its season with a 3-1 home victory over Greater Latrobe.

Match scores were 25-19, 25-22, 17-25, 25-14.

Kaleb Proudfoot had three blocks for the Golden Tornado while Colton Welter had nine kills and Tyler Figlioli 14 digs.

Butler will compete at the Norwin Tournament Saturday.

Softball

Mars opened its season in Florida Friday, splitting a pair of games.

The Planets dropped a 3-2 decision to Nutley (N.J.) before bouncing back to defeat Masters Academy of Vero Beach, Fla., 17-4.

Winning pitcher Alyssa Harris had a double and single in the second contest. Taylor Schmidt doubled in the victory.

Mars plays Franklin Regional on Saturday as part of its Florida trip.
