Runners don't have to choose between 2 great racing events
Runners usually have to choose between two popular longer races traditionally held on the same spring weekend.
But there’s no conflict with this year’s Just a Short Run and Cook Forest Half Marathon, so runners can fit both into their training plans.
The 10-year-old Just a Short Run, which begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and takes place in North Park, has grown into one of the region’s largest distance running events. It began in 2001 with a half marathon and 5K. A 30K distance was added the following year as a training event for those running spring marathons.
In 2010, Just a Short Run added an 8.1-mile option, a great choice for those training for the Pittsburgh Half Marathon in May.
Last year, more than 400 runners participated at each of the distances and this year might see the event’s largest field, possibly reaching the 2,500 participant limit.
Organizers suggest registering and picking up your race packet at Elite Runners and Walkers in McKees Rocks from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday to minimize congestion at the Boathouse starting area Saturday.
Online registration will be open until 9 p.m. today. Day-of-event registration opens at 6:30 a.m. Saturday at the Boathouse.
Although Just a Short Run’s consecutive laps around North Park Lake might seem to some as exciting as running on a treadmill, the course is familiar and gently rolling —- great for a long run or a gauge of fitness. Runners in the longer distances will appreciate the support of aid stations located every 1Z\v miles along the route.
Just a Short Run is an official Team in Training event. In the past three years, the race has raised more than $280,000 to help the fight against leukemia, lymphoma and blood cancers.

The Cook Forest Half Marathon and 5K at 11 a.m. April 2 offers participants a different distance running experience.
Although the weather can be unpredictable, the course is always scenic, the air clear and fresh. The out-and-back route along the Clarion River is the perfect fix for runners tired of circling North Park Lake.
The Cook Forest course is mostly level, but a sizable hill in the last mile of the run adds a challenge to both the half marathon and the 5K. Some half marathon runners also might experience postrace soreness as the road is unusually canted in places.
In addition to being one of the most scenic, Cook Forest Half Marathon is one of the region’s oldest distance runs. The event celebrates its 27th edition this year.
The race benefits Clarion University’s track and field team and Clarion athletic scholarships. Many team members serve as volunteers at the starting area and at aid stations every 2Z\x miles along the course.
Runners can register at www.runhigh.com until Monday. Day-of-event registration opens at 8:30 a.m. April 2.
All participants should arrive early as the starting area can be congested.
