State police investigate slashed tires at mall
State police are working to find out who slashed the tires of 20 vehicles parked at the Clearview Mall in Center Township sometime Wednesday morning.
The victims had left their vehicles at the parking lot about 5 a.m. to board buses that took them to a pro-President Donald Trump rally in Washington, D.C.
Cpl. Mike Lewis said there are no suspects and police cannot say at this point if the vandalism was politically motivated.
“I'm not sure if the cars had political signs on them,” he said, “and we're still looking into that to see if it was political.”
The vehicles, he said, were parked across from the Eat'n Park in the center of the mall.
He did not immediately know how many tires in all were slashed. The vehicles apparently sustained no other damage.
The tires appeared to have been cut by a “sharp object,” Lewis said, possibly a knife or a screwdriver.
The vandalism occurred between about 5 and 11 a.m., when someone noticed all the slashed tires and contacted police.
“We went and got all the vehicle information and all the license plates,” Lewis said, “and we have everything to open up the investigation. We're using numerous investigative techniques to find out exactly who did this.”
He said police are looking into whether surveillance video could provide any clues.
Police as of 6 p.m. were still attempting to contact some of the victims, who were apparently on their way home from Washington and were unaware of what happened.
A telephone call by the Butler Eagle to mall security was not returned Wednesday.
Lewis said police did not immediately receive any tips to aid their investigation, but he asked anyone who has information to call them at 724-284-8100.
