BC3 discontinues paramedic program

Classes have low enrollment

BUTLER TWP — Butler County Community College trustees voted Wednesday to discontinue the three-year-old paramedic credit and certificate programs.

Francie Spiegelmyer, vice president for academic affairs, said the college had changed the offerings from a 15-month noncredit program to a two-year credit program because of national trends pushing health safety workers to complete more training.

However, the program has low enrollment, fluctuating between three and nine students, and it is not practical to keep the credit program.

“It’s a disappointment for us, but we’re hopeful for the future,” Spiegelmyer said.

She said those who wanted to complete the training were more interested in getting it done quickly rather than have the two-year degree.

A noncredit paramedic program will likely be reintroduced next school year.

The trustees also:

• Decided to switch architects in the renovation of the John A. Beck Jr. Library

Because of disagreements in the contract, Stantec of Butler will no longer do that work.

The trustees approved Renaissance III Architects of Pittsburgh to take over the renovations at a cost of $333,360. The renovated library is still set to be ready in January 2016.

Stantec will be reimbursed $5,000 for its preliminary services. Trustees Joan Chew, William DiCuccio, Grace Hawkins and Kim Geyer voted against giving the company the reimbursement.

• Decided that Troy Jay Construction of Slippery Rock will complete the construction of a natural outdoor education center at the Children’s Creative Learning Center for $491,460. The area is to be completed this summer and is set to open in the fall.

• Approved the bid from Innovative Plastering Concepts of Irwin to complete a $123,000 refurbishment of the Science and Technology building. This will repair the natural wear and tear of the outside of the building.
