Big spending doesn't pay off in race
Big spending did not lead to big rewards for the 14 candidates who competed in the May primary for Butler County commissioner.
In the final campaign finance reporting period, which lasted from May 5 to June 8, the four winners were relatively frugal compared to some of their competitors.
Leslie Osche of Butler Township, the top Republican vote-getter, spent $14,237 during this period. Kim Geyer of Adams Township, the second-place GOP winner, spent $5,208.
During the previous period, which ran from Jan. 1 to May 4, Osche spent $21,576 and Geyer spent $19,487, including $16,500 of her own money.
The Democratic winners spent even less.
The top Democrat, Jerry Johnston of Butler Township, spent $429. Kevin Boozel of Mercer Township, the second place Democratic winner, spent $904. During the previous period, Johnston spent $8,056 and Boozel spent $6,322.
Meanwhile, Republican Bob O’Neill of Cranberry Township spent $57,055 and was left with third place and no spot on the fall ballot.
He spent $38,357 during the previous reporting period, including a $40,000 loan from himself.
Lisa Metcalfe of Cranberry Township, who ended up in fourth place among the GOP candidates, spent $34,253 this period.
Jeff Smith of Butler, who came in sixth place, spent $20,223 this period and $30,430 during the last period. Jim Keffalas of Butler Township came in seventh place, and he spent $22,148 of his own money on his campaign during the last two reporting periods.
For the Democrats, Dave Johnston of Saxonburg spent $8,426 during this period and spent $17,613 during the last period. He came in third. Incumbent Commissioner Jim Eckstein spent $4,700 this period and $4,033 during the last period, and ended up in last place.
The four winners will face each other in the Nov. 3 election for the three seats on the board of commissioners.
