Troopers accuse woman of leading them on drunken chase

A Concord Township woman is behind bars after being arrested following an alleged police chase Friday night in northern Butler County.

Jody L. Covert, 53, was arraigned Saturday morning by District Judge Sue Haggerty. She is charged with a felony of fleeing from an officer and misdemeanors of resisting arrest and DUI, among other summary traffic offenses related to the alleged car chase.

Covert was placed in Butler County Prison on $20,000 bond.

According to charging documents, police received reports of an erratic driver in the area of the Clearview Mall. The caller reported a grey Dodge SUV almost hit multiple parked and driven vehicles in the mall’s parking lot.

Police said as they were responding, Butler County 911 dispatchers received multiple other calls reporting the erratically-driven vehicle, and the collective reports noted it was driving north on Oneida Valley Road.

Police said they caught up with the vehicle near the road’s intersection with Hohn Farm Road in Oakland Township. Police conducted a traffic stop and identified Covert as the driver.

Police said they smelled alcohol in the vehicle and saw normal signs of intoxication in Covert’s behavior.

“When asked, Covert initially denied drinking alcohol, though there was an open container of alcohol in the center console,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit.

Police said other troopers and EMS were requested to assist.

“Covert was asked to step out of the vehicle,” police said. “She put the vehicle into drive and ignored several orders to put it back into park before fleeing the scene.”

Police said the chase spanned about 3.4 miles heading in the general direction of Covert’s home in Concord Township. Police said speeds during the chase fluctuated between 30 and 60 mph, and troopers used their own vehicles to stop the fleeing vehicle.

“I attempted a second (pursuit intervention technique) maneuver, which was successful, causing the vehicle to spin out into the western berm,” police said.

Police said as troopers approached the disabled vehicle, Covert then refused to exit the vehicle and resisted being removed and arrested. Police said Covert continued to act “belligerent” toward troopers and EMTs evaluating her at the scene.

According to police, Covert later refused to have her blood tested.

A preliminary hearing for Covert is scheduled March 22 before District Judge Lewis Stoughton.
