SUMMIT TWP — State police say a 10-year-old boy accidentally shot his older brother with a handgun Sunday at their home in Summit Township.

The bullet struck and went through the lower left leg of the 11-year-old, who was taken to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, police said. The boy suffered no broken bones and he was to undergo surgery to remove any bullet fragments.

The boys were alone at their family's home on Moran Road about noon when they reportedly heard a noise in the basement. They looked down the steps and thought they saw a shadow.

Police said they retrieved a gun that was stored up high in a cabinet in one room and loaded it with ammunition they got from another room, police said. Moments later, the gun went off.

The boys went outside where a passer-by saw them and notified a neighbor, who called 911.

An ambulance crew got there and subsequently drove the injured boy to the hospital. His condition was not known but authorities said they expect him to make a full recovery.

Trooper Jessica Clouse, the investigating officer, said the Butler County Children and Youth Services agency was notified.

She said she later spoke to the boys' parents. Police also seized the gun. They declined to identify the caliber, make and type of the firearm.

Police said the investigation continues and no decision has been made if charges will be filed.

“This should serve as a life lesson and learning lesson,” Clouse said, “to always secure your weapons within your house.”
