SLIPPERY ROCK TWP, Lawrence County — Firefighters extinguished a chimney blaze Sunday night.

Chief George Johnson of the Slippery Rock Township Volunteer Fire Department said the fire was contained to the chimney at the residence of Mike Ruterto at 3597 Eckert Bridge Road.

Firefighters used retardant powder to douse the flames before cleaning the chimney of debris. Johnson said creosote buildup caused the fire.

Nearly 30 firefighters responded to the fire, which was reported to Lawrence County 911 before 9:30 p.m. The Portersville, Scott Township and Shenango Township volunteer fire departments assisted Slippery Rock.

Crews cleared the scene at 11:17 p.m.
