Auctioneers will sell a load of old school equipment sitting in the unused Broad Street Elementary next weekend.

The Butler School District's superintendent, Brian White, said the auction is unrelated to his recent proposal to open the school back up within the next few years. The elementary school closed as part of the district's consolidation efforts a few years ago, but now it's being eyed for reopening in a possible second round of reorganization.

“This is not related to any plans to reopen,” White said. “It's normal business for a school district to routinely dispose of old equipment.”

Indeed, the auctioneer tapped to handle the sale, Yaracs Family Auction and Appraisal, started handling the district's auctions about 20 years ago. Raymond Yaracs said they usually get a good showing for school auctions.

Since its closure, Broad Street Elementary became a somewhat unconventional storage facility for the school district. A large amount of old equipment is housed there, plus items such as books for the district's book shop.

White said they're simply getting rid of old equipment that might bring in some cash for the district.

So what's on the list? Two big ticket objects will likely bring in the most money. Those are a 2002 Chevy pickup truck and a chipper/shredder machine. Yaracs said the latter is “like new.”

A few other items might inspire bids from nostalgic alumni, such as school desks or weight room equipment. Yaracs said he predicts some restaurant operators might be interested in a large amount of old cafeteria equipment that's up for sale.

Most of the auction will take place in the school's gymnasium and in some of its hallways, Yaracs said.

The auction will begin at 9 a.m. June 22 at 200 Broad St. in Butler.
