Ruth Alice Stitt

Ruth Alice Stitt

Ruth Alice Miller Stitt passed into the presence of the Lord peacefully on Jan. 17, 2021, surrounded by her family at Good Samaritan Hospice in Cabot.

Born Nov. 24, 1934, in Turtle Creek, Ruth was the daughter of the late Asa P. Miller and Florence Page Miller.

Ruth graduated from Turtle Creek High School at age 16 and worked for a year at Westinghouse Air Brake to earn money for college. Ruth graduated from Nyack College, majoring in missions. Following graduation, Ruth worked at the headquarters of the Christian and Missionary Alliance in New York City.

After working in New York, Ruth moved back to Monroeville and took a job with Koppers Research Center as a secretary to a research director. Ruth met Charles “Charlie” Stitt, the love of her life, at the Allegheny Center Alliance Church in Pittsburgh, and they were married Aug. 11, 1962.

Ruth moved with her husband from Butler to Middletown, Ohio; Pittsburgh; Naperville, Ill.; and back to Butler in 1982. In each of these locations, Ruth was active in Christian women’s clubs and church activities, most notably missions, while at the same time raising two children.

When Ruth returned to Butler in 1982, she enrolled in Slippery Rock University and graduated summa cum laude, majoring in social work. Ruth then worked for many years as a medical social worker in Butler County.

Ruth had a lifelong interest in missions. She, along with her husband, made three trips to a Middle Eastern country to promote the Gospel and to assist missionaries in the area.

Ruth was very committed to education for her children and grandchildren. She felt that a part of educating the whole person was to introduce them to, and have them experience, various cultures around the world. Vacations were planned for the whole family to various parts of the world, where the children and grandchildren would experience much.

Ruth loved spending winters in Naples, Fla., where she had many friends and participated in a women’s ministry at church. Ruth also loved taking trips abroad. The trip that excited her the most was a camera safari through Tanzania and Kenya, where she could observe the animals in their natural habitat.

Ruth was a member of Community Alliance Church in Butler and active on the Missions Committee. She was both a volunteer and a board member of Lifeline of Southwest PA, which offers caring and confidential help for pregnant women and families.

Ruth is survived by her husband of 58 years, Charlie; a daughter, Lori (Gary) McCoy of Butler; a son, Charles (Anne) Stitt of Portage, Ind.; two grandchildren, Ethan McCoy of Butler and Paul Stitt of Portage, Ind.; a sister, Grace Kissell of Cabot; and a brother, Glen (Sharon) Miller of Charlotte, N.C.

In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Miller; a brother-in-law, George Truell; a sister-in-law, Janice Miller; and a granddaughter, Sarah Stitt.
