A Wilmerding man was sentenced in U.S. District Court on Tuesday to five years and 10 months in federal prison for charges related to the fentanyl overdose death of a Brady Township woman in 2016.

Michael D. Burrows, 32, pleaded guilty to violating his prohibition as a felon by having a firearm and to trying to sell fentanyl, according to court documents. He had been facing similar charges in Butler County Court but the county case was dismissed on Sept. 22.

The charges come from incidents in September 2016 and, ultimately, the overdose death of 24-year-old Elizabeth Arblaster of Brady Township.

Arblaster died of a fentanyl overdose in 2016 and police investigating the death searched a Lawrence County man’s Old Plank Estates apartment in Butler Township, and discovered evidence of a drug-dealing operation — dozens of bags of heroin and crack cocaine and more than $1,600 in cash, police said. The apartment belonged to Eugene J. Smith III, 48, of Wampum, whose case has not been resolved.

Seized in a back bedroom was a plastic bag containing 20 glassine bags of heroin marked “The King” and two baggies containing a “rather large” amount of suspected crack. Police believe Burrows had been using that bedroom while staying at Smith’s apartment.

According to a press release announcing Burrows’ conviction, he had a Smith & Wesson .38 special revolver on Sept. 8, 2016.

Smith is a former resident of Butler Township and is facing charges of drug delivery resulting in death, conspiracy, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, and possession of a controlled substance in a related case to Burrows’ dismissed case.

United States District Judge Arthur J. Schwab sentenced Burrows.

Once Burrows is released, he will be on probation for six years.
