WEXFORD — Butler baseball coach Dave Florie had this game pegged from the start.

"Good pitching stops good hitting," he said. "And you saw plenty of good pitching tonight."

In a battle for first place in Section 1-AAA Wednesday night, North Allegheny pushed across a pair of runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Golden Tornado 3-1.

Fielding miscues played a role in all four runs. Butler entered the game averaging just under eight runs per game while the Tigers average more than six per contest.

"Anytime we have Ryan Oglesby on the mound, we know we've got a chance to win," NA coach Andy Mattix said. "We owe that kid a ton for what he's done for this program the past couple of years."

A senior right-hander, Oglesby was 9-1 in 2009 and now is 4-0 so far this spring.

Oglesby and Butler left-hander Zach Sessa allowed five hits each. Sessa was lifted for C.J. Miller after the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth.

"Both pitchers were outstanding," Florie said. "This should have been a 1-0 game."

North Allegheny broke a scoreless tie in the third inning when Eric Harbison reached on an infield error, was bunted to second and scored on Mark Jackson's bloop single to center.

Butler got even in the top of the sixth. John Crummy singled with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored when NA left fielder Brice Nikithster misplayed a fly ball as he and center fielder Zach Jergan converged on it.

Pinch-hitter Nick Sell singled sharply to left to begin the NA sixth inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Mike Cammarata laid down a sacrifice bunt to get Sell to third. Cammarata reached base himself when no fielder covered the bag after first baseman Bobby Swartwout fielded the bunt.

With the infield in, the Tigers' Cody Gaertner hit a ground ball to Butler second baseman Cody Montgomery, whose throw to the plate was in the dirt as the go-ahead run scored.

Jergan was hit by a pitch to load the bases before a sacrifice fly by Rob Sittig plated the Tigers' third run of the game.

"We just lost focus or something during their half of the sixth inning," Florie said. "We didn't play good baseball there, but I'm not down on these kids."

Butler had runners at first and second with one out in the fourth inning, but Ryan Fennell grounded into a double play.

The Tornado had runners at first and second with one out in the first inning, but Swartwout struck out and Roman Bargo lined to first to end the threat.

"We only struck out three times against (Oglesby), and that's pretty good against him. But North Allegheny always fields the baseball," Florie said.

Oglesby didn't allow a walk. He threw 96 pitches, 64 for strikes, and is being recruited by Slippery Rock University and St. Bonaventure.
