The Karns City baseball team was the road team on the Pullman Park scoreboard Friday night, but it certainly had a home-field advantage.

Karns City pounded out 14 hits, including four triples and four doubles, on the way to a 13-2 win over Union Friday night.

The Gremlins have played seven games at Pullman Park this season. It was only the second time on the field for the Golden Knights, and it showed.

"If you are not used to playing here, there are some big gaps out there in the outfield," said Karns City coach Travis Twentier.

The Gremlins took full advantage of the spacious outfield gaps at Pullman Park — and the Union outfielders' inexperience in covering them.

"It's a beautiful park, but I tell you what, night games here are tough," said Union coach Doug Kriebel. "It's hard to see sometimes."

In the first inning, it was hard to retire Karns City hitters.

The Gremlins sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the frame and plated seven runs against Union starter Ron Cary.

Brad Francis had a two-run triple, Brad Fuhrer had a run-scoring double, Derek Sadowski had an RBI triple and No. 9 hitter Cole Rottman had a double that brought home a run.

"We came out and hit the ball hard," Twentier said. "When those kids at the bottom of the order see that happening, they want to be a part of it, too.

In two games against Union, Karns City has scored 28 runs.

"I told their coaches that if they are ever in a hitting slump, schedule a game against us," Kriebel said.

Fuhrer finished the game 3-for-3. Zach Kepple was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI.

Even freshman Nick Ganter got into the action with an RBI triple in the top of the seventh inning.

Cary had a day he would soon like to forget, coughing up 11 earned runs in three innings. Even when things went right for Cary, they went wrong. His only strikeout victim reached base on a passed ball.

Meanwhile, Sadowski was effective for Karns City, giving up two runs on three hits in five innings.

Pat Foster pitched the final two innings for the Gremlins.

For Union, the growing pains of a young team are still evident. Still, there were some bright spots.

Sophomore Taylor Smith relieved Cary and pitched three scoreless innings before giving up two runs in the top of the seventh.

"The thing is sometimes he gets a little frustrated," Kriebel said. "Other than that he has a bright future. If the school keeps me, I have a bright future, too, because I have a lot of young guys who can play."

The future is now for Karns City.

With just a week left in the regular season, the Gremlins are making one last push toward the playoffs.

As long as they can slash like they did against Union, the Gremlins will be in good shape, Twentier said.

"Hopefully we stay hot," he said.
