A Kittanning man returned an air conditioner at a Walmart in Cranberry Township on Thursday night, but the return landed him in jail because, according to police, he had never actually bought the item.

Dennis Warren Shrecengost, 35, is being held on $10,000 bond after police arrested him Thursday.

On Friday morning, District Judge David Kovach arraigned Shrecengost on felony counts of retail theft and receiving stolen property and a misdemeanor charge of theft by deception.

According to a police complaint from the Cranberry Township Police Department, Shrecengost entered the Walmart around 9:40 p.m. empty-handed. He grabbed an air conditioner from the sales floor, then allegedly walked over to customer service and presented it to employees as an item he wanted to return.

He allegedly handed a receipt for $166.92 and got the money from customer service. Shrecengost continued to peruse the store before police arrested him. They allegedly found the receipt on him as well as two packs of a cough and cold medicine.

According to police, Shrecengost admitted that he had taken it from the store without paying. Police estimate that he stole a total of $179.80.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for later this month. According to court documents, Shrecengost applied to be represented by a public defender.

With the Government Building closed for Flag Day, a public defender could not be reached in time for publication.
