Moniteau drops Redbank Valley

Moniteau's Josh Stockert connects with a pitch on Tuesday during the Warriors' win over Redbank Valley at Pullman Park.

Moniteau was in a giving mood Tuesday at Pullman Park.

The Warriors walked 14 batters and hit two others. Colton Cumberland even gave back a stolen base when he retreated from second to first on a foul tip, unaware the catcher caught the pitch to make it a live ball.

None of the above mattered. Cumberland stole second again two pitches later and Moniteau's bats produced 15 hits and a 14-8 baseball victory over winless Redbank Valley.

“You don't normally win when you walk 14 and hit two guys,” Moniteau coach Ross Martin allowed. “But our bats have been making up for a lot of that kind of stuff lately.

“We've been hitting the ball extremely well.”

Martin said the Warriors' team batting average is “probably well above .350.”

Tuesday's game was played in raw conditions, with sleet and snow falling at times.

“I can't blame the weather for our pitching, though,” Martin said. “We walked nine guys in our last game. We're just not finding the zone. We're losing focus on the mound.

“Obviously, this is something we have to fix before we get into the meat of our schedule.”

The meat arrives Thursday, when the Warriors face rival Karns City at Pullman Park.

The Warriors (2-2) used four pitchers Tuesday and each walked at least two batters. Winning pitcher Joe Holfelder, the second of the four hurlers, walked five in less than two innings. Starting pitcher Cumberland walked four straight with one out in the second, departing with the game knotted at 4.

The Warriors broke the game open when their first seven batters scored in the bottom of the second.

“That's the inning that killed us,” Bulldogs coach Greg Campbell said. “You can't allow an inning like that. I don't care what the weather's like.”

Kyle Armagost tripled to left to begin the frame and scored on Cumberland's double to left. Josh Stockert singled home Cumberland. Three straight walks followed before Zach Jewart had a run-scoring infield single.

Holfelder contributed a two-run single and Armagost hit a sacrifice fly to conclude the onslaught.

Stockert and Cumberland had three hits each for Moniteau. Armagost and freshman shortstop Josh McBride scored three runs each.

“Josh has been a really nice addition to this team,” Martin said. “We have other freshmen pushing for time, too. Jacob McBride is one of them, but he's stuck behind Stockert, who is hitting the cover off the ball.”

Redbank Valley started ace pitcher Caden Truitt, but he threw 34 pitches in the first inning and did not take the mound for the second.

“Caden's my ace, but he just couldn't get loose today,” Campbell said. “I'm sure the weather played a factor there. It was hard to get a feel for the ball.”

Bulldog pitchers walked six in the first two innings, but none afterward. Losing pitcher Ryan Niccolai did not retire a batter before being replaced in the second.

“We have a bunch of juniors and seniors on this team, but they're inexperienced,” Campbell said. “They were freshmen and sophomores when our team won back-to-back district championships and they did a lot of sitting.

“Hopefully, we'll improve as the season goes on.”
