Knights claim 12th win in row
Asa Adams connected with a two-run single. Dom Bucko made a sliding catch in the outfield to keep a run off the board.
Cole Shinsky allowed one hit and struck out eight batters in six innings of work.
The Knoch baseball team continued to roll Wednesday night at Kelly Automotive Park, beating Kiski 4-0 on Senior Night to capture its 12th straight win.
“All through the aspects of hitting the ball, playing defense and pitching, everybody’s coming together at the right time,” Adams said. “We’re getting close to playoff time and this is where we need to play our best baseball and we’re doing that.”
Five of the Knights’ seven hits against the Cavaliers came from seniors.
Adams hit a two-out single to left field in the first inning off Kiski pitcher John Bowser that plated two runs.
Jordan Kowalski was 3-for-3, including a double, and scored twice.
Garrett Traggiai also singled for the Knights, who are 14-1.
“We’re playing really well right now, the wheels are really turning,” Kowalski said. “Everyone is going to keep playing their best.”
Knoch coach George Bradley also pointed out the defensive effort of senior Ryan Grossman.
“We go real deep,” Bradley said. “There are a lot of guys who haven’t been getting any playing time. Looking at (Ryan) Grossman, he made a couple of nice plays. That one was hard to field, the one that goes right at you.”
Leading 2-0 in the fourth inning, the Knights were able to add some insurance.
Kowalski opened with a single and Adams was hit by a pitch.
Traggiai laid down a bunt for a single, but a bad throw allowed him to advance to third and Kowalski and Adams to score.
“Like I told our guys, we beat ourselves today,” Cavaliers coach Joe Culler said. “We gave up two runs on the plays in left field and another two on the bunt error. You can’t make mistakes like that against a good pitcher like (Shinsky).”
Shinsky didn’t give Kiski much breathing room. He only allowed one hit, a single by Bowser in the third inning.
That baserunner was erased when Adams threw him out trying to steal second base.
When Shinsky walked Noah Hansen to lead off the fifth, he didn’t get past second. Bucko’s catch kept him there.
“We’re trying to keep things rolling,” Adams said. “If we can keep going playing our best baseball, it’ll take us into the playoffs and give us a nice little edge.”
While the outcome against Kiski didn’t have any playoff implications, Knoch wanted to keep building momentum heading into the playoffs.
The Knights have one regular season game left against Pine-Richland today.
“It keeps everyone’s confidence up,” Kowalski said. “Everyone keeps playing to the level they can play.”
