“Always … Patsy Cline” opens Friday at the Succop Theater at Butler County Community College.

The show, under the direction of Larry Stock, was written by Ted Swindley and based on the true story of an unlikely friendship between Houston native, Louise Seger and country star Patsy Cline.

Davlin Smith expertly played story teller Louise who was more than thrilled to relive the tale of meeting her longtime idol. Louise did not just meet her but shared a meal, a performance and a friendship captured in memories and letters.

The show opens in Louise's kitchen as she begins to regale the audience with the story of her Patsy Cline obsession and eventual connection. The single mom fan girl had a wit that wouldn't quit and more moves than a rattlesnake. Her rapport with the audience is more than impressive. Her chemistry with Cline is believable and at times precious.

Though there were not many opportunities for Smith to belt out tunes, she made the most of each opportunity offering up some excellent harmonies and a robust “Bill Baily” at the conclusion.

Patsy Cline, played by Kelly Benner, comes on the scene during a performance and brings the classic crooner to life with “Honky Tonk Merry Go Round,” “Back in Baby's Arms” and “Anytime.” Benner's mannerisms and her presence were uncanny.

Crowd pleasers “Walkin' After Midnight” and “Crazy” transport the audience back to Cline's hay day. The 26 song set list is performed with all the gusto, glitz and glam that Cline conveyed through her brief six year career.

The duo's friendship took center stage during the second half where the ladies shared coffee, songs and stories about their lives and loves conveyed through Cline's songs. From the first note to the last hand clap, Benner and Smith were a sheer delight. Two hours and thirty minutes of music, memories and more combined with audience participation make for a great night of theater.

Kudos to the stellar band that moved the show along effortlessly with Karen O'Donnell directing.
