A Thursday morning fire in a garbage truck brought the closure of Unionville Road while firefighters from Cranberry Township extinguished the garbage that the driver dumped from the truck.

CRANBERRY TWP — A fire that appeared to start in a garbage truck sent smoke billowing into the air and closed Unionville Road in the township Thursday.

The fire was reported just after 10 a.m. Within minutes, Cranberry police and fire departments were on scene to battle the blaze.

The driver of the truck noticed the fire and found a clear spot on Unionville Road to dump the load, according to information from the Cranberry Volunteer Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived soon after and extinguished the flames within about 15 minutes of the initial call. They then used long sticks to move the pile around and address lingering hot spots.

A second fire truck was brought on scene to provide further assistance.

According to fire department information, a township loader was brought in to transfer the garbage into a new truck and take it to the dump.

In addition to Unionville Road being closed at both ends, the intersection of Unionville and Ogle View was is also temporarily closed. All roads were back open and the scene was cleared by noon.
