Girl, 14, allegedly assaulted on bus

Fourteen-year-old Toni Montgomery enjoys spending time with friends, playing outside and eating chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream.

The eighth grader, who has Asperger’s syndrome, was allegedly assaulted Monday afternoon by a classmate on a school bus for the Butler School District.

Her mother, Kelli Montgomery, said her daughter was left with a sizable welt on the side of her head after another girl pushed her into a window in the bus. The argument supposedly stemmed from Toni sitting at the back of the bus close to where the other girl sat.

Butler police are investigating, and Montgomery said she wants to press charges.

“She’s been called names and picked on,” Montgomery said of her daughter, but the taunting had never become physical before.

Toni was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital following the altercation as recommended by the Valley Lines bus service. She was checked for a concussion and cleared of any severe ailments.

She now rides a different school bus.

“I think the changing of the buses was the best thing,” said Montgomery, who lives on Wayne Street.

She notified authorities of the alleged assault about 3:20 p.m. Monday when her daughter got home. Butler Fire Department emergency medical technicians examined the girl before Butler Ambulance Service took her to the hospital.

School district Superintendent Dale Lumley said it is district policy not to release information about juveniles. He said any allegations would be investigated by the school, but the findings would not be made public.
