SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University will honor more than 3,000 students and present multiple awards as parts of its Academic Honors and Student Leadership Convocation next month.

The convocation at 1:30 p.m. March 25, at Morrow Field House, kicks off SRU’s monthlong “Celebration of Excellence,” which will honor various students and teachers at SRU.

The President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching will be presented to Douglas Strahler, an assistant professor of communication. The award honors a faculty member who has demonstrated exemplary commitment to teaching and student learning.

David Jordan, an associate professor at SRU’s College of Business, will be honored with the President’s Award for Outstanding Academic Advising.

Emily Brumbaugh, a music education major from Altoona, Pa., will serve as the event’s student speaker. Brumbaugh will graduate in May with a 4.0 GPA.

SRU will also recognize Timothy Samec, a physics major from Drums, Pa., as the university’s nominee for the 2017 Ali-Zaidi Award, which is presented by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education board of governors. Samec will graduate in May and plans to pursue a doctoral degree in biomedical engineering.

Among others to be honored at the event are students designated as “Presidential Scholars,” those in the top 20 of the class based on overall GPA and minimum credit hour requirements; graduates of SRU’s honor’s program; students on the university’s dean’s list; academic scholarship winners; Norton Undergraduate Scholarship winners; Service Learning Scholars and student leaders; and varsity athletes who achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher.
