Gremlins roll past Keystone, 50-0

KARNS CITY — The homecoming crowd at Karns City High School was treated to quite a show on Friday night.

Karns City dominated from start to finish, as six different Gremlins found the end zone on the way to a 50-0 football victory over Keystone.

“Getting a big win tonight, that was huge for us. We definitely needed it,” said junior running back Glenn Toy, who led a balanced Karns City rushing attack with 82 yards on 11 carries.

Eleven different Gremlins received at least one tote, resulting in 397 yards.

“The offense moved well tonight,” said Karns City head coach Ed Conto. “I like to give opportunities to kids to make plays. They work hard, so I like to give them the chance.”

Alex Kinkela wasted little time taking advantage of his opportunities. The senior fullback capped a nine-play, 70-yard drive on the opening series with a 6-yard burst to give the Gremlins a 7-0 edge.

In the second quarter, Kinkela rumbled into the end zone following a 35-yard aerial strike from Tyler Kepple to Ethan Williams that set up Karns City on the Keystone 10.

“My line blocked for me and it was just a good job,” said Kinkela. “The line really improved from last week.”

Toy scored on a 19-yard scamper late in the second frame to give the Gremlins (2-2) a 23-0 halftime cushion.

The Panthers (1-3) were coming off their first win of the season — a 9-6 triumph over Clarion-Limestone — but the Gremlins were too much to handle.

Keystone had a chance to stick around early, following an interception by Tanner Hannold on Karns City's second possession.

The Panthers marched down to the 10-yard line with a first-and-goal, but the Karns City defense toughened up and Keystone's 27-yard field goal attempt went awry.

“You just have to put the ball in the end zone when you're at that 10-yard line,” said first-year Keystone head coach John Stiglitz. “You just got to learn to finish drives.

“We need to rebuild, come back next week and learn from the mistakes we made.”

The Panthers had another chance to score late in the game with junior varsity players on the field for both teams. However, the Gremlins recovered a fumble at their own 7-yard line to preserve the shutout.

Five plays later, Zach Moore scored from 3 yards out. The drive was keyed by a 67-yard sprint by Wyatt Everetts.

“I was pleased late in the game that the JVs all got to play,” said Conto. “The JVs scored a touchdown and kept them out of the end zone.”

The varsity squad did its fair share of scoring, too.

Senior quarterback Brady Ellenberger faked a handoff in the third quarter that completely fooled the Keystone defense. He ran around the left side untouched for a 26-yard touchdown.

The same play nearly gave Ellenberger a TD against Wilmington last week, but a referee inadvertently blew the play dead because the fake was so effective.

“It was the same exact play,” said Conto. “We finally got in the end zone with it — a little redemption for the kid.”

“I got pretty lucky on that one,” said Ellenberger. “The line did a great job blocking and I was just running as fast I could.”

Jerod Hutchison scored on a 5-yard run to open the second half and Kepple hooked up with Williams for a 2-yard TD pass in the fourth. Adam Garing booted a 22-yard field goal.

The powerful showing was a breath of fresh air for the Gremlins, who were looking forward to bouncing back following a 41-12 loss to Wilmington in Week 3.

“(The win) was a real nice feeling after that loss last week,” said Ellenberger. “Everybody is doing a great job and we're having a fun time.”
