Man totals new car in crash

He's ticketed for careless driving

MIDDLESEX TWP — Talk about a case of buyer’s remorse.

Township police said a Sarver man in a crash Thursday morning totaled the car he bought new just five days earlier.

Devin E. Earney, 22, was apparently driving to work shortly before 8 a.m. when he lost control of his 2016 Chevrolet Malibu while westbound on Route 228 east near Ekas Road.

“He was trying to pass another vehicle and he stated that he had to swerve to avoid an oncoming car,” said township officer Brian Costanzo.

He made the maneuver in a no-passing zone, police noted.

Earney’s Chevy crossed over the eastbound lane and went off the road. He managed to barely miss a utility pole before hitting a small embankment. The severely damaged car ended in a private yard about 75 yards off the road.

Earney was not hurt, but he wasn’t feeling too lucky.

“He told me he bought the car brand new Saturday,” Costanzo said.

He later called his mother, who picked him up and drove him home. The car had to be towed.

Costanzo issued Earney only one ticket, for careless driving.

“He just bought the car,” the officer said, “and I kind of felt bad for him.”
