A repeat shoplifter from Butler was sentenced Tuesday to two years of state supervision, including a stint in prison, for charges of retail theft and driving with a suspended license to which he pleaded guilty in March.

Judge William Shaffer sentenced Garrett S. Barnes, 33, to be held in a state prison for seven months followed by community rehabilitation. The sentence calls for Barnes to be treated for drug and alcohol abuse, according to Barnes' lawyer, public defender Maura Palumbi. He also was sentenced to 60 days of incarceration, but he received credit for time already served. Barnes must pay a $500 fine.

Barnes was arrested for stealing a combined $296 in merchandise Nov. 18 from two stores at the Clearview Mall in Center Township.

A week earlier, Butler Township police arrested Barnes for allegedly taking two large televisions from the Walmart at the Butler Commons shopping plaza.

State police said Barnes was caught in the act while placing a cologne set at Clearview Mall's Boscov's into a shopping bag around 12:30 p.m. Nov. 18.

When an employee confronted him, according to court documents, he fled the store, leaving the bag behind.

Among other charges, Barnes faced a felony count of retail theft. Felonies are used when the defendant has two or more prior convictions for shoplifting, regardless of the value of the stolen merchandise, or for a first-time offender accused of taking items valued at more than $2,000.

Barnes declined to make a statement during his sentencing.
