No regrets in Grove City
ERIE — No regrets.
That's the mindset Grove City coach Jeff Bell approached Friday's District 10 Class AAA championship game against Cathedral Prep.
He never wavered from it, no matter how tight the situation.
The Eagles ran their usual ground attack, but converted three huge first downs in their own territory and forced five turnovers in a 33-0 blanking of Cathedral Prep at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
“This was huge,” said Eagles quarterback Tyler Dagres. “This is the game we've been looking forward to since last year (a 28-16 loss to the Ramblers in the finals).
“This was the biggest step. Now we'll take it one week at a time. This feels good.”
With the win, Grove City (11-0) will face the WPIAL champion — the Knoch-Montour game was slated for Saturday — next Friday or Saturday at a date, site and time to be determined.
“The game plan, it was there,” Bell said. “I wasn't going to hold back to say, ‘Gee, you should've tried this, you should've tried that.
“If we were going down, we were going down swinging,” Bell added.
Grove City's first aggressive move came on the first play of the second quarter when, facing a fourth-and-1 at its own 41, Dagres rushed up the middle for a 2-yard gain.
Six plays later, Wes Phipps scored from 25 yards out to give Grove City a 7-0 lead with 8:43 before the half.
The score capped an impressive 13-play, 80-yard drive that consumed 6:17 off the clock.
The Ramblers (9-3) nearly evened the score on the first play of the ensuing drive when quarterback Damion Terry found Nathan McLaurin on a slant route that picked up 74 yards down to the GC 7.
On third-and-5, Terry fumbled and the Eagles' Alex Gilmore recovered to end the threat.
The Eagles ran off nine plays before punting with 1:24 left before halftime.
The Ramblers' offense went nowhere and was forced to punt to give Grove City the ball at the CP 40 with 18 seconds left.
Dagres found Harold Price for a 15-yard pass and Brian Murone trotted out to attempt a 47-yard field goal, a line-drive shot that was good to give Grove City a 10-0 lead at the break.
“That was just the second field goal I've attempted all year,” Murone said. “I knew we'd have a great snap, a great hold, great blocking.
“All week we practiced it. I knew we could do it,” Murone added.
Murone wasn't finished yet. The Eagles attempted an onside kick to open the second half.
The ball was fumbled and the Eagles recovered to start at the CP 41.
“The coaches had confidence in us,” Murone said. “We wanted to kick and see what kind of bounce we'd get. Then, we got a great hit that caused the fumble.”
Grove City converted a fourth-and-5 at the 25-yard line to keep the drive alive. Murone booted a 28-yarder with 5:26 left in the quarter.
A blocked punt by Chauncey Miller on the Ramblers' next possession helped put the Eagles at the CP 5.
Phipps rushed for 4 yards, then scored on the next play to open up a 19-0 advantage.
Kyle Trinch intercepted Terry on the following drive and Dagres scored on a 1-yard sneak to take a 26-0 advantage with 1:15 left in the frame.
Another Trinch interception early in the fourth quarter set up another scoring jaunt by Phipps, a 4-yard run that closed the scoring.
“We are a heavy running team,” Dagres said. “We knew they liked to blitz and we thought we could get some yards outside.”
The Ramblers made a final push to score late, using a 36-yard pass from Terry to Delton Williams and a 50-yard run by Nick Dubowski, the latter to put the team in a first-and-10 situation at the GC 11. But the Ramblers could not score on the final three plays of the game.
Grove City limited the potent Cathedral Prep offense to just 187 total yards and five first downs.
“We just wanted to try and get pressure to the quarterback,” Trinch said. “If you can't, you can't play him on the pass. They have some great receivers. We wanted to stay deep and not let them get by.”
To win the title, the Eagles had to vanquish a team with nearly 3,400 total yards and 44 touchdowns.
“Every week, the kids have done what they needed to do,” Bell said. “We talked before the game that the three previous meetings, we never forced a turnover.
“Offensively, we had a great game plan. We ran the ball and then threw when we needed to. And, our special teams were great,” Bell added.
Said Phipps on his teammates, “For 365 days, we've been waiting for this. These guys have been preparing, doing everything they have to do. They were fast, physical, confident.”
For Bell, watching this year's class lead the way was very special to him.
“It means a lot to these kids,” Bell said. “This is the best senior class Grove City's ever had. A championship, back-to-back undefeated (regular) seasons. These kids deserve to win Friday nights.”
Notes: Phipps led all rushers with 101 yards on 18 carries. ... Tony Turner recovered a fumble late in the third quarter. ... John Chereson attempted a 47-yard field goal on the Ramblers' first possession, but the ball was just short.Grove City 33 Cathedral Prep 0
