Koerper opts for Clarion

Seneca Valley's Matt Koerper (59) helps to haul down Penn Hills' Corey Jones during the Raiders' 30-13 WPIAL Quad A playoff win over Penn Hills in November. Koerper will play his college ball at Clarion University.

JACKSON TWP — Clarion University just seems to be a perfect fit for Matt Koerper.

The Seneca Valley High senior signed a letter of intent last month to continue his academic and football careers at the school.

Lafayette, Robert Morris, Millersville and Grove City College also were on Koerper's list, but his decision became a rather easy one.

“I really liked Clarion's coaches and what they had to offer,” said Koerper. “They made it a priority to sign me. Plus, I very much wanted to play football in the PSAC.”

Koerper, a resident of Seven Fields, started at tackle on both sides of the ball the last two years for the Raiders. He also saw a bit of action at defensive end, which is where Clarion will utilize him within its 4-3 scheme.

“Defensive end is what I'm best suited for,” said Koerper, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 240 pounds. “I'll be rushing the passer a lot and you have to be faster than a tackle to do that. I'm working on my speed and hopefully, I'll be able to make the transition.”

Clarion head coach Jay Foster is impressed with Koerper's skills.

“He's a tremendous athlete,” said Foster, preparing for his seventh season at Clarion. “Between his size and athleticism, we're excited to have him. He has a good chance to be a special player for us.”

Koerper was a big reason why Seneca Valley turned in one of the most successful seasons in program history last fall.

He made 28½ tackles, including six for a loss, and intercepted a pass as the Raiders finished the season 8-3 and won a WPIAL playoff game for the first time in nine seasons.

“I was in a lot more plays this past season,” Koerper said. “It's nice to look back and know the seniors were part of something special. We left a great tradition. Hopefully, it can be sustained.”

Seneca Valley coach Don Holl sees a bright future for Koerper.“He's a big-framed kid, but also moves well,” he said. “He's got a high ceiling.”Koerper may see the field this fall.“Normally, we like to redshirt our freshmen,” said Foster. “But his physical gifts will give him a chance to play next season. Athletically, he's at the top of our list.”“I'm working on getting bigger and stronger,” Koerper said. “I wouldn't mind being redshirted my freshman year. I look at it as another year of experience.”Clarion is coming off a 3-8 campaign. Koerper plans on majoring in business.
