BUTLER TWP — It wasn't the smoothest ride, but the Freeport boys basketball team continued to roll Saturday afternoon.

The Yellowjackets overcame 28 turnovers and an 8-of-18 showing at the free throw line to knock off Summit Academy, 65-48 in a WPIAL Class AA preliminary round playoff at Butler High School.

Freeport's win streak is now at 14. The team last lost to Valley on Dec. 15.

Freeport (15-2) will next face Washington (17-4), champion of Section 5, at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Gateway High School.

Freeport held a modest 44-40 lead late in the third quarter and was up by seven points at the end of the period before outscoring the Knights 16-6 in the fourth.

The Knights missed 12 of their first 13 field goal attempts of the final period. When Summit's Marcus Taylor got a 3-pointer to fall with 1:22 left on the clock, his team still trailed 61-47.

"We were able to jam (the Knights) up in the fourth quarter and it was effective," said Freeport coach Garrie Davies. "You can't simulate in practice the speed we faced today.

"Give a lot of credit to Coach (Cliff) Guy," added Davies of Summit's coach. "He did a great job."

From the second quarter on, Summit committed 16 turnovers to Freeport's 25.

"We had a limited lineup today, so we didn't want to press early and wear our guys out," said Guy. "But once we got down, we had to press."

The Knights' hustle got the team back in the game late in the second quarter.

Facing a 34-18 deficit, Summit scored three baskets in a 12-second span, aided by consecutive turnovers by the Yellowjackets, who were still able to walk to the locker room with a 36-24 edge at the break.

"Believe me, coming from a former point guard, every turnover gets to me," said Davies. "We'd like to throw every pass accurately, but we don't want to inhibit our kids' natural abilities."

The game was tied at 8 midway through the first period when the Yellowjackets closed the quarter with a 10-2 run.

Freeport senior guard Alex Isenberg scored 10 of his game-high 17 points in the opening eight minutes.

"Alex is really a catalyst for us at the point," said Davies. "He makes great decisions. We haven't faced a team with Summit's level of speed in about two months. It would be easy for a player to be indecisive with the ball, but he wasn't."

Darius Frantz and Jake Campbell both scored 11 points for the Yellowjackets, while Shawn Liberto added 10.

Steven Boone led the Knights (9-12) with 14 points and Scott Ketterer scored 10.

"Our kids didn't give up and that's what I'm most proud of," said Guy. "We had 27 different players this year, but we were still able to have one of the better seasons in our history."
