CLARION — A cold shooting night in the middle of the season hurts.

One that ends a team's season stings even worse.

The Moniteau boys basketball team converted just 24 percent of its field goal attempts (13-of-54) and never found a flow offensively, losing 47-42 to Brookville in a District 9 Class AA semifinal Thursday night at Clarion University's Tippin Gymnasium.

A win would have guaranteed the Warriors a state playoff berth.

"We can shoot well and play with any team on our court," said Warriors coach Randy Armagost. "But when we're on the road, and it doesn't matter where we're at, we can't knock down shots."

It was the teams' second meeting in less than four weeks. The Raiders (16-7), the district's top seed, won at home 47-37 Feb. 1.

"Tonight's game was identical to that first one," said Armagost. "You want every kid to believe they can hit the big shot, but it just didn't happen."

Raiders coach Bud Baughman watched his team successfully execute his game plan for most of the contest.

"We knew we had to keep Kyle (Armagost) from penetrating," he said. "We wanted to force them to take 3s instead."

And the Warriors took plenty of them — 27 to be exact — but they sank only three, misfiring on their first 10 shots from beyond the arc.

Despite their struggles, the Warriors kept things close.

Kyle Armagost's 3-pointer cut Brookville's lead to 45-42 with 19.2 seconds left, but it was the last basket the Warriors scored before the Raiders' Kyle Baughman and Chad Brocious each hit a free throw in the waning seconds to ice the game.

The Warriors never led. The closest they got was when Armagost's 3-pointer cut Brookville's advantage to one point with 6:37 left in the third quarter.

Moniteau trailed by three early in the fourth quarter before Brookville went on a 6-0 run in a span of in a little more than 3 minutes to take a 41-32 lead.

"We'd make a run, but then lose focus," Coach Armagost said.

It was not a perfect performance by the Raiders, either.

The team averaged just 11 points per quarter entering the final period and committed 25 turnovers, but it found a way to advance to the district title game, where it will face Kane next Saturday.

Dan Ion and Jared Heschke led Brookville with 10 points each.

Kyle Armagost led Moniteau (11-12) with 20 points and Zach McCormick tallied 10.

"We just can't get over the hump," said Coach Armagost. "I'm getting worn out trying to figure it out."

Seniors playing their final game for Moniteau included James Shope, Jereme Loos, Lewis Martino, Mike George, Zach McCormick and Jake Timmerman.
