CLARION — Outside or inside, the Moniteau girls basketball team's offense was out of sync.

As a result, the Warriors are out of the District 9 playoffs.

Moniteau found itself down 12-0 after one quarter and never got closer than eight points as Kane earned a 46-27 Class AA semifinal win Tuesday night at Clarion High.

Kane used a man-to-man defense nearly the entire game, with frontcourt players Natalie Kossack, Kaila Jamerson, Kalie Walter and Drew Victory wreaking havoc on the Warriors.

The four players combined for 11 blocked shots and helped the Wolves pull down 33 rebounds to the Warriors' 21.

"We were prepared for their height," said Moniteau coach Mark Yeager. "We were the smaller team on the floor in just about every game this season.

"We threw in a few wrinkles to our offense, some pick and rolls, but we just didn't execute well."

With their inside game not working, the Warriors desperately needed a good outside shooting night, but they hit just 1-of-9 3-pointers.

"It's all about playing tough defense and this is the time of year when you really need it," said Kane coach Dave Kiehl. "We've been able to control the inside in almost every game this year."

Adding to Moniteau's troubles were 24 turnovers, many leading to easy baskets for the Wolves (21-4).

Trailing 20-8 at halftime, Moniteau's offense finally came to life in the third quarter, as the team made five of its eight field goal attempts.

Amanda Sloan scored seven of her team-leading nine points in the period as her team cut its deficit to eight points.

The Warriors were about to win the quarter when Kane's Emily Carlson fired a 3-pointer, which fell just as the buzzer sounded.

The trey gave the Wolves a 35-21 lead with eight minutes to play.

Needing a huge fourth period, Moniteau managed just six points from the free throw line.

The Warriors (14-10) were 6-8 at the beginning of February when they reeled off eight straight wins and captured the KSAC South title.

"Me and the other coaches were looking at the schedule just a few weeks ago," said Yeager. "I didn't think we were going to make the playoffs. But then we go on that winning streak.

"I'm proud of the girls," he added. "I thought we played well defensively tonight, we just couldn't get it done on offense."

Jamerson led all scorers with 13 points.

It was the last game at Moniteau for the team's four seniors: Alex Guercio, Jaryn Beatty, Kathleen Harding and Jenna McCorry.
