Butler gives game away
GREENSBURG — All was well — except for Butler's ballhandling.
The Golden Tornado used impeccable foul shooting and solid rebounding to build an 18-point lead with 5:50 left in the third quarter Wednesday night in Round 3 of the Hempfield holiday girls basketball tournament.
But that lead drowned in a sea of turnovers as Woodland Hills rallied for a 48-43 victory over Butler.
The Tornado suffered 31 turnovers, 19 in the second half.
“We completely lost our composure,” Butler coach Dorothea Epps said. “We had this game won. All we had to do was keep our composure and we didn't.
“This is one of the worst losses we've had.”
Butler sank 16 of 19 free throws, Woodland Hills just 4 of 12. The Tornado had a 33-24 rebounding advantage and three girls score in double figures.
“None of that matters if you can't hold on to the ball,” Epps said. “We had forwards trying to get it up the floor because our guards were afraid to handle it.”
Butler (1-7) dropped its sixth straight game and third in as many nights at the Hempfield tourney. Woodland Hills improved to 4-4 with its lone win of the tournament.
The Tornado had a 24-10 lead at halftime. When MacKenzie O'Donnell sank two free throws early in the third period, the lead ballooned to 30-12.
“This is big for us,” Wolverines coach Korie Morton-Rozier said. “Their zone was killing us early in this game. They have a lot of tall, long players and we couldn't penetrate that defense.”
But things opened up for senior point guard Alexis Coleman.
Woodland Hills' leading scorer failed to register a point in the first half, managing only two field goal attempts. She sank 10 of 13 shots in the second half — including four 3-pointers — to finish with a game-high 26 points.
Coleman joined Butler's Caitlin Baxter on the all-tournament team.
Epps said her team lost its focus in the second half.
“We started collapsing down on their big girls, who weren't doing any scoring to begin with,” the Butler coach said. “The girls just quit following the game plan. They lose focus too easily.”
After the Wolverines pulled within 36-34 with five minutes remaining, Butler seemed to weather the storm. Baxter sank a layup, stuck back an offensive rebound and O'Donnell canned two more free throws to give the Tornado a 42-34 edge with 3:17 to play.
Consecutive treys by Coleman fueled a 10-0 Woodland Hills run, however, giving the Wolverines a 44-42 edge with 1:55 left. It was the team's first lead since 4-2 early in the first quarter.
A Jasmine Bailey free throw with 1:28 left cut the gap to 44-43. Woodland Hills missed the front end of two one-and-ones and turned the ball over in the final 45 seconds, but Butler never scored again.
Woodland Hills took 34 shots in the second half. Butler took 13.
“We have guards getting rebounds instead of forwards,” Epps lamented. “That can hurt because if forwards get those rebounds on the offensive end, they turn into putbacks.”
O'Donnell had 16 points and six rebounds for Butler. Bailey had 11 points and 14 rebounds while Baxter had 11 points and four assists.
