CRANBERRY TWP — An event next month will take a closer look at an important piece of Butler County and American history.

The Washington’s Trail Summit 2018, The Many Voices of the Trail, will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 13, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Cranberry Township. The event will feature several speakers and discussions involving Washington’s Trail and George Washington.

The Washington’s Trail driving route runs through 10 counties in Western Pennsylvania, extending from the Maryland border in the south to Fort LeBoeuf in Waterford, Pa., in the north. Commemorating young George Washington’s first military diplomatic mission in the fall and winter from 1753-54, Washington’s Trail is under review by the National Park Service for potential National Historic Trail status.

September’s event features keynote speaker Michael Oberg, a distinguished professor of history at SUNY-Geneseo and author of “Native America: A History.” It also features presentations by Joe Stahlman, a member of the Tuscarora Nation from Susquehanna Valley; David George-Shongo, executive director of the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum in Salamanca, N.Y.; Perry Ground, Turtle Clan member of the Onondaga Nation of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy; and Matt Briney, vice president of new media at George Washington’s Mount Vernon.

Welthetowaco, played by Tom Vecchio, and George Washington, portrayed by Jason Cherry, will also participate, along with members of the National Park Service who will display and talk about fur pelts.

The Summit is sponsored by Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau, Oil Region Alliance, and Washington’s Trail 1753.

There is a cost associated with the event, and registration is required. The deadline is Sept. 10.
