Union girls, Grove City bow in tourney

Despite 14 points and five rebounds from Brooke Pollock and 11 points and 10 rebounds from Tina Lipps, the Union girls basketball team dropped a 75-46 decision to host Otto-Eldred in this District 9 Class A quarterfinal game from Saturday.

The Lady Terrors (18-6) had a one-point lead after one period, but rang up 45 over the second and third quarters combined to pull away from Union (15-8).

Grove City's Wesley Phipps decisioned Hickory's Tyler Gargano 7-2 to capture the District 10 Class AA 160-pound championship at Sharon High School on Sunday.Phipps decisioned Greenville's Tyler Landfried 9-4 in the quarterfinal round before earning a 5-0 decision over Mercer's J.T. Mannozzi in the semifinals.The top five placewinners advance to the upcoming Northwest AA Regional.The Eagles had two other wrestlers advance.Ian Abplanalp dropped a 4-0 decision to Saegertown's Sean Byham 4-0 in the consolation finals for a third-place finish at 119.He had decisioned Fort LeBoeuf's Taylor Fox 6-2 in the quarterfinals, then suffered a technical fall to Reynolds' Mason Beckman 20-5 in 1:56 before pinning Hickory's Nate Stidham in 3:49 to reach while third-place finals.Also, Kirby Buchanan decisioned Cochranton's Ross Peterson 8-3 in the fifth-place finals at 135 pounds.Slippery Rock was unable to qualify any wrestlers to the regionals.WPIAL Class AAAt the WPIAL Class AA tournament this past weekend at Chartiers Valley, Mars and Summit Academy did not advance any wrestlers to this weekend's PIAA Southwest Regional.Mars Chris Boggs (189) decisioned Ben Vranish of Yough 4-3 in the first round before falling to Fort Cherry's Gary Kiefer 9-2 and Southmoreland's Dakota Datz 6-0.Ronnie Dakan (160), Shane Smith (171) and Cameron Cress (285) each lost first-round and first-round consolation matches.For the Knights, Kenneth Turner (112) and Devin Bickel (130) each posted first-round wins, but lost the next two matches.Turner recorded a major decision over South Side Beaver's Jaron Martin 16-7, but was pinned by Charleroi's Aaron Toth in 3:44, then was decisioned by Keystone Oaks' Nick Zanetta 4-2.Bickel captured a 7-5 overtime decision over Fort Cherry's Adam Lucarini, but suffered a technical fall to Bentworth's Francis Mizia (16-0, 5:44), then a tough 3-2 overtime loss to Southmoreland's Avery Overly.Aaron Carp (119) and Niran Williams (189) lost their first two matches and also were eliminated.
