Knoch girls take 1st title since '92

Gina Robb won three events as the Knoch girls track and field team wrapped up its first section title since 1992 with an 84-66 win over Kiski Area Tuesday.

Robb captured the 110 hurdles and the long and triple jumps for the Knights (7-0 overall, 5-0 in the section).

It also was the 200th victory in the 35-year history of the program.

"We had talent," said Knoch coach Dale Boring. "We just had to put the girls in the right place."

Knoch finished third in the section last season.

"Our girls responded very well," Boring said. "They did whatever we asked of them."

Behind Steve Snow and Grayson Hixon, who won two events each, the Knoch boys (7-0, 5-0) sewed up their section consecutive section title.

"The key was, all season long, we've been a pretty balanced team," said Knoch boys coach Wess Brahler. "We have good athletes in a lot of events."

• Darius Frantz won three events, including a school-record performance of 21 feet, 4 inches in the long jump, to lead the Freeport boys to a 127-23 drubbing of Shady Side Academy.

• Freshman Morgan Siebka won both hurdles events to lead the Slippery Rock girls to a 98-52 win over Greenville.

Shaler 3, Butler 2 — The Golden Tornado dropped the final three games of this section match. Scores were 25-23, 25-17, 17-25, 25-27, 11-15.Dustin DeFrancisis had 22 assists, Mike Dreher 10 kills and Dylan Snodgrass 18 passes for Butler (4-4).
